You could add a few more aikido principles:

Awase - blending with your audience. This relates to going with the flow.

Sensen no sen - The founder of aikido said: “It is not a question of either ‘sensen no sen’ or ‘sen no sen.’ If I were to try to verbalize it I would say that you control your opponent without trying to control him. That is, the state of continuous victory. There isn’t any question of winning over or losing to an opponent. In this sense, there is no opponent in aikido. Even if you have an opponent, he becomes a part of you, a partner you control only.”

Simply fantastic. You captured some of the essence of Aikido and applied it to a situation where you truly are "naked".

I have never studied Aikido directly, but I am aware of its concept. I love how you have applied it to speaking because a hostile audience can be a fear in some situation. Its so hard to not get defensive but you give some excellent suggestions!

Becoming hostile in response is often the most logical choice but as you point out here, it definitely isn't the best. It will only feel good momentarily but the results just aren't there to give in to this temptation. good read.

Well written and timely. Although I have presented to many audiences, I always do a bit of research to prepare for myself and my audiences.

Good practical advice and well worth applying.

Cheers!

Very interesting article. As for me the most interesting moment is to redirect enemy's force against himself. I always wondered about this moment. This is key moment of couple of eastern martial arts.

Kolb Learning Style

Nice article, it's interesting to see how philosophies from Akido can be used in a dojo and a boardroom. Now you have me wondering where else I can find other values and ways of thinking that work in multiple situations.

As the old saying goes, in the expert's mind there are few possibilities, but for one with the beginner's mind, the world is wide open.

I practiced aikido for over 10 years and I still have to deal with conflicts as it is part of all of us. One of the key I have learned is not to put it aside nor trying to control rather... Letting be what the situation offers as each movements brings new opening & opportunities.

I am amazed that Garr reveals so many keys and it is entirely up to us to accept & learn how to use them effectively ...
